World renown recyclers Covanta have reported an immediate 50 percent improvement in recovery of ferrous metals after upgrading a standard scrap drum magnet to an Eriez P-Rex Rare Earth Scrap Drum. The Eriez P-Rex is the world’s first permanent magnetic drum that is stronger than an electromagnetic drum. It’s the strongest permanent magnetic scrap drum in the world.
Covanta is removing ferrous metals from bottom ash, and after the success of their first Eriez rare earth drum magnet, they replaced five other standard drum magnets with the Eriez P-Rex Scrap Drum Magnets. With the P-Rex Drum Magnet, the magnetic force remains consistently strong across the width of the drum. With standard drum magnets, the center of the drum magnet is the strongest area, which can cause missed metals near the sides of the conveyor.
In addition to P-Rex’s greater recovery, Covanta has also been impressed with how this advanced drum helps them maintain productivity and avoid expensive equipment damage. Mike Shattuck explains, “P-Rex’s magnetic strength enables installation with a greater gap between the conveyor and the drum, where it’s better able to deal with the widely varying sizes of metal objects remaining in Covanta’s bottom ash.” He continues, “The closer gaps required by standard drum magnets can cause large objects to potentially become wedged between the belt and the magnet, triggering equipment jams and damage.”
